Today we are going to reminisce about early 90s video games. Weather you were a SNES or a Sega person, most games (except Sonic) came on both gaming systems so you didn’t really miss out on certain games. It just came down to what controller you preferred, number of buttons, etc… So one of those awesome game was Earthworm Jim. He wore a spacesuit, fought evil and used his worm body to maneuver around the worlds. What really set him apart was his humor (his pants fall off on the opening screen) and the actually cool art/graphics of the game. The first one came out in 1994, and would eventually release 4 different ones, the last one being in 2010. But 1994 is where it was at. Going to Blockbuster in hopes to find the game because last weekend you only got so far. You had your Mountain Dew and a couple buddies and the nights goal was to make it to and defeat the end boss Psy-Crow.

Earthworm Jim plays as a 2D side scrolling action with elements of a run and gun game as well. The worlds were cleverly designed where you can go up, down, left or right and at points was kind of a maze to figure out where to go next. On one level, you even have to make sure this damn dog named Peter Puppy made it as well. You battled bosses like Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, Evil the Cat, Bob the Killer Goldfish, Major Mucus, and Professor Monkey-For-A-Head. Honestly… genius names. The goal was to save Princess What’s Her Name and to not get entrapped by all the crazy enemies looking to take Jim out for good.

Earthworm Jim – The Unexpected Hero

And according to Steam, here is the original premise and backstory of game.

Jim wasn’t always a studly super-worm. He was once just a spineless, dirt-eater with no real mission in his life…

But then something unexpected happened. The evil Psy-Crow was transporting a super suit, built by the genius Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, to Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, Slug-For-A-Butt, but along the way it was stolen by a rebel. Although Psy-Crow killed the rebel, the suit fell down to Earth, landing on an Earth Worm. That cosmic twist of fate placed Jim in control of an ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit.

Anyway, Earthworm Jim found out that Princess What’s-Her-Name had been captured and set out to save her. Meanwhile, there’s a bounty on Jimmy and plenty of people are in line to take Queen Slug-For-A-Butt up on her offer.

Now Jim must make it to the princess and stay clear of Psy-Crow, the intergalactic bounty hunter, until the final battle with Queen Slug-For-A-Butt. To accomplish this, you’ll have to use every weapon and ability at your disposal to wriggle your way through dozens of original and just plain weird levels.
